I had to watch Sofia Coppola's The Virgin Suicides for my Psychology class. I've wanted to watch the movie for a while; I just never found time to do so. I really liked the movie, especially visually. Coppola's directing was spectacular, as was her script. Lux (played by Kirsten Dunst) was my favorite Lisbon sister, and though the movie itself was somewhat depressing, it is a truly beautiful movie. I definitely recommend seeing it if you haven't already.

Looking through magazines, the same stick-thin figures, perfectly coifed hairstyles, and made-up faces that appear to require Zambonis to remove are present. Yes, Zambonis. Additionally, I find that many actresses take themselves way too seriously. Then Jennifer Lawrence comes along. The first time I saw her was at the 2011 Oscars in that gorgeous, curve-hugging Calvin Klein dress where she was nominated for her work in Winter’s Bone. She was off my radar until she was cast as Katniss Everdeen in the highly anticipated movie, The Hunger Games. Prior to the movie’s release, I became more and more drawn to what the actress had to say. All it took was watching a few interviews (here's a favorite) before I reached a conclusion: Jennifer Lawrence is not only my new favorite actress, but also a new idol. Besides having an awesome personality, she also looks healthy – a rare sight in Hollywood. She has curves and proudly shows them off, isn’t afraid to be herself, doesn’t take herself seriously (at all), and frequently compares herself to a troll and being as nervous as a Chihuahua. How can anyone not like her? With two more Hunger Games movies in store, I can’t wait to see more of my new favorite actress and idol. I may get so excited that I begin to shake like a nervous Chihuahua.
Oh, and if you haven't read the books and/or seen the movie, I highly recommend that you do!
It never fails. Every time I watch the Oscars, I always have that cliché "One day, that'll be me up there!" moment. This is followed by the realization (and sad reality) that my first - and to date, last - acting experience was playing an oompa loompa in my eighth grade class' rendition of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Oh, well. Here are my thoughts on Oscar fashion!

My blog's name is Hitchcock Blonde. I am blonde. However, that isn't to say I am not a fan of brunettes.* Alfred Hitchcock was known for casting iconic blondes in his movies. When watching Vertigo the other night, I took to Kim Novak's style: the perfect up-do, simple-yet-sophisticated clothes, and flawless makeup. I need to work on mastering that triple threat!
Yesterday night, I watched Breakfast at Tiffany's. Oh, how I adore that movie! Audrey Hepburn is the epitome of class and sophistication. Similar to Novak, Hepburn masters the triple threat. Between the two, the brunette takes the cake in this case. Can I just be Audrey Hepburn? Or Holly Golightly - she has a spectacular wardrobe and ends up with Paul Varjak (George Peppard), sigh. Then again, Novak as Madeleine/Judy won the heart of John (played by James Stewart). Hm, in this case, both ladies are winners.
*Blondes really do have more fun, though. hehe
Traditionally, colors associated with this time of year are autumnal ones - reds, yellows, oranges, and browns; I'm not too fond of this color cornucopia. Blends of ocean-inspired colors surely don't come to mind, but I can't ignore their soothing qualities. Perhaps inspired by Disney's The Little Mermaid (I'll admit to watching it over the weekend), I've re-discovered an appreciation for all things under the sea, especially the tranquil feelings the colors emit. When I was little, I wore my Little Mermaid dress emblazoned with Ariel and flounder religiously, bright in hot pink and patterned with seashells. My preference for "Look at me, look at me!" pink to oceanic neutrals of soft blues, greens, and greys has come a long way, but it is most definitely for the better.
Note: I still am (and forever will be) a fan of pink.

As stated in my last post, the twenties-vibe has made multiple appearances at NYFW. The vibe was especially present in Ralph Lauren's Spring 2012 collection, which I adore. The Gatsby-influenced pieces are stunning in every way, from the exquisite draping to the intricate beading. The hats were the perfect compliments for many of the looks, and the multitude of pastel colors were the perfect introduction for a spring collection. I had forgotten that in the 1974 movie version of The Great Gatsby, starring Mia Farrow (as Daisy Buchanan) and Robert Redford (as Gatsby), Lauren was the costume designer. Now, forty years later, the iconic designer brings us back to the Jazz Age with a collection as classic as the Ralph Lauren brand itself.
After seeing Rise of the Planet of the Apes over the weekend, I couldn't help google-ing Freida Pinto when I returned home. Her part in the film was minor (she played James Franco's girlfriend - lucky girl!), but she managed to keep a steady screen presence each time she appeared. Her flawless skin, minimal makeup, and extrememly-wearable clothes allowed Freida's natural beauty to shine through, and after watching several interviews with the Slumdog starlet, it's obvious that her beauty on the outside also reflects that within. She is very genuine and down-to-earth, and consistently mentions how blessed she is to be doing what she does. I look forward to seeing her in many more movies!
The end of an era, huh? That's exactly what Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 was to me, along with the thousands of others who saw it this past weekend. I went to the midnight premiere last Thursday, July 14th, and dressed up as my favorite character, Luna Lovegood, for the occasion! Before the movie began, my friends and I reminised over the previous seven movies, and looked back on our first times either reading the books or seeing them come to life in the films. Each time I saw one of the movies was an experience in itself, and it was wicked to see so many fellow HP fans gathered together in one place at one time to view the newest film in the series. I grew up alongside the trio - Harry, Ron, and Hermione - and watched as they grew up before my eyes onscreen. J.K. Rowling created a complex and fantastic series that will forever be a part of my life, and it was definitely emotional to see it end. At the London premiere, Rowling herself summed up the franchise's end best, saying, "The stories we love best do live in us forever. So whether you come back by page or by the big screen, Hogwarts will always be there to welcome you home." And that couldn't be more true.
I saw it again on Sunday (in 3-D) and thought it was even better the second time around!
P.S. - Can someone get me some butterbeer?
